How I Get to Know My Characters | 4 Different Character Profiles

Characters are probably my favorite part of a book. Yes, the plot is important too (because it's no fun reading about a character who sits around in a chair all day doing nothing 😆), but the plot is really only important when it matters to the (you guessed it) character.

That being said, a good character is my personal key ingredient to crafting a really great story. But how, you may ask, do I get to know my characters?

For me, it depends on the book. I can brainstorm a massive chapter-by-chapter plot, and literally only know the character's name and hair color. Or I will get a general grasp on a story and totally pants it but know every nitty-gritty detail about my charrie down to the color of socks they wore the day before the book started 😆. I can do a combination of all of the above, or none at all. it really depends. But I can show you my top 4 Character Questionnaires to help you get started and to give you some inspiration. Feel free to mix and match, combine, use none, or all. Let's go!

Questionnaire #1: The Esme.

I call this the Esme because that's the name of the first character I

really and truly used this questionnaire on.

There are 32 questions, and you can answer them as

vaguely or creatively as you want!

Questionnaire #2: The Baseline

This is called the baseline because it's

pretty much the bare minimum

I need to know. (;

Questionnaire #3: The Sleepover

I call this the sleepover because it's more like a list of secrets.

You legit ask, "What are 10 secrets about you?"

and have them answer. They can be as silly or serious as you want.

Not all of these will end up in your actual book,

but it's nice to pry open your characters innermost

hearts and see what they've been hiding.

Questionnaire #4: The Sara

I got this one from a webinar that Nadine Brandes

and Sara Ella put on a while ago.

I love using this when I need something

simple on the extensive side ;P

Well, that's is for today, folks! I hope you liked it!

Let me know how you get to know your characters! Do any of these character questionnaires look interesting to you? I'd love to know!

Cheers!
